An Urban Cooper’s Hawk

An Urban Cooper’s Hawk

Urban Cooper’s hawk, here in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was hanging out in a pine tree, waiting for dinner to appear. This is an adult, as opposed to the one in the header image. My neighbors and I have seen this hawk a lot in the past month. Such a hawk is easy to spot when it is flying, or when it lands near a bird feeder. The so-called urban forests of the Northeast Heights of Albuquerque provide easy cover into which they are well camouflaged, however.

I took this photo two minutes into the Super Bowl. When photographic opportunities appear… (Not much was happening in the first two minutes of Super Bowl 🙂 )

The Urban Cooper’s Hawk, Waiting for Dinner to Appear

Last year I briefly saw a fledgling in the yard. I would enjoy seeing more in the yard this year.

  1. What a beautiful hawk! His chest feathers are very distinct and his eyes are looking right back at you. He is framed perfectly all around. It a very special image. Thank you for sharing this with us, Susan.

    1. Hi, Juanita. Thank you so much for the comments! Over the years, I have become very fond of the hawks – well, all of the birds – who visit, especially the ones who seem to visit regularly. I *think* this may be a female (not certain, but in the Cooper’s, the female is significantly larger than the male, and this bird is fairly large and “plump” 🙂 )))))) ), so I want to hope maybe any spring babies will learn to come here, too. Never hurts to have dreams. 😉
      Thanks for dropping by! 🙂

    1. Hi, Lavinia. Thank you. I live in a part of town that has a lot of hawks, and I have come to enjoy them. I think this may be a “neighborhood hawk” that has been around for several years. I have been told we have owls as well, but I think I’m going to have to go to Tim and Laurie’s if I want to see one. 🙂
      Thanks for stopping by.
